Send a Tip

Something wrong in a New Hampshire public body? Here is how to tell Granite State Report, and what happens to what you send.

Most accountability stories start with one person who noticed something. A fee that did not add up. A meeting that went private and came back with a decision. A record that should exist and somehow does not. If you know where to look, Granite State Report wants to hear it. Pick the door that fits, read how your information is handled, and send it.

Before you send anything

  • The online forms are not anonymous. What you send is stored in the site’s form records with the host, WordPress.com, and a copy is emailed to the newsroom’s Gmail account. The host also logs IP addresses.
  • Never use a work computer, work phone, work email, or work network. Your employer can see what crosses them.
  • Files carry hidden data: author names, edit history, and in photos, often the location. A screenshot or a photo of a printout carries less.
  • For anything sensitive, use Signal or the mail, not the form. Both are listed next.

Ways to reach the editor

Signal is the best mix of safe and easy. Mail leaves the least digital trail. The form and email are fine for anything you would not mind your employer seeing.

  1. Signal, username GraniteStateReport.09. Messages are encrypted end to end, so nobody between you and the editor can read them, and you can set them to disappear. A username lets you reach the editor without handing over your phone number. Use a personal phone, never a work one. Free at signal.org.
  2. By mail, with no return address. Send copies, never the only original, from a mailbox away from your home and your workplace.

  3. The quick tip form below, from a device and network that are yours. Tor Browser hides your IP address from this site.
  4. Email, to granitestatereport@gmail.com, from a personal account. Google keeps a copy, and your address is attached.
  5. Phone, (603) 931-9264. Say as little as you like on the first call.

How your information is handled

  • The editor reads it. Granite State Report is one reporter in Northfield. Nobody else opens the submissions.
  • Your name stays out of anything published unless you say in writing that it can be used.
  • GSR will refuse any demand to identify a confidential source, and will fight it. The New Hampshire Supreme Court recognized a qualified reporter’s privilege to protect confidential sources in State v. Siel, 122 N.H. 254 (1982).
  • Qualified means a court can, in some cases, order disclosure. No newsroom can lawfully promise more than that. The best protection is information GSR never had, so send only what is needed to check the story.
  • Nothing is published on one person’s word. Tips are checked against records and people, and the agency is asked to respond, as the Code of Ethics requires.
  • Want terms first? Call or write and ask before you send anything. A promise made to a source is kept.

What you are agreeing to

By sending a tip, you confirm and accept the following.

  • What you send is information you lawfully have. You did not break into a system or take files you were never given access to.
  • You are not sending classified national-security information, another person’s medical records, or anything involving a child.
  • Granite State Report may use what you send for reporting, will try to verify it, and decides on its own whether and how to publish.
  • Granite State Report does not pay for tips, is not your lawyer, and gives no legal advice. If your job or safety is at stake, talk to a lawyer first. For free civil legal help, call 603 Legal Aid at 1-800-639-5290 or apply at 603legalaid.org.

Quick tip

Only the first box, the identity choice, and the checkbox are required. Leave the contact box blank to stay unnamed; without it, there is no way to write back.

Every person in New Hampshire has the same right to ask for public records under RSA 91-A. The 91-A Request Builder writes the letter and counts the deadline. If an agency stonewalls you, tell GSR here.

Version log. Send a Tip v1.0, October 1, 2026: page created as the tips hub, linking Tell Us Your Story, Nothing to See Here, and Inside the Building, with handling commitments and their legal limits, submission terms, and a quick tip form run by Jetpack Forms. v1.1, October 1, 2026: Signal added at the top of a new “Ways to reach the editor” list; the file upload box, which had rendered with no visible drop area, now shows drag-and-drop text and an Upload button and accepts up to five files; legal aid line now names 603 Legal Aid. v1.2, October 1, 2026: Signal listing changed from a phone number to the username GraniteStateReport.09, so a source can write without sharing a number. The phone line is unchanged. This page is never edited without a log entry.
